among the fastest-growing metropolitan economies, where Ankara took the sixth and Istanbul the seventh with their respective populations as 4, 5 and 15 million. Furthermore a new law is underway to create new metropolitan municipalities in various regions of Turkey.
Turkey has so much to offer her visitors; breathtaking natural beauties, unique historical and archaeological sites, steadily improving hotel and touristic infrastructure and a tradition of hospitality and competitive prices. Therefore, it is not surprising that this country has recently become one of the world’ s most popular tourism destinations. In 2011, 31 million internationals arrived to Turkey. With its 1 million bed capacity and 28 marinas with 8,800 yacht capacity, Turkey has become the primary destination for the tourists from the region.
Lifting of visas between Lebanon and Turkey in 2010 has led to significant increase in tourism. There are six flights a day between Beirut and Istanbul. for investment and business along with its traditional hospitality. In this regard, we are particularly keen to further strengthen our economic and commercial ties with the countries of the region.
Middle East and North Africa region’ s share in Turkey’ s trade and investment has been steadily increasing over the last decade. Turkey’ s volume of bilateral trade with Middle East countries gained considerable momentum and reached 49 billion dollars by the end of 2011 reflecting a fourfold increase compared to the year 2003.
I can say that this increasing relations are still far from the actual potential. I strongly believe in the enthusiasm and capacity of the people of the region. The future offers incredible prospects for those who have the courage to cooperate. Turkey stands ready to do all it can and opens its doors to the region.
