Amager Bakke wasteto-Energy plant by BIG
Amagerforbrænding into a ski slope for the citizens of Copenhagen
Amagerforbrænding is in many ways situated on an edge condition. It is a place in the outskirts of Copenhagen, but also the center for new recreational activities. It divides the local area in two, with factories on one side and housing on the other. It is a place you know from afar, but where few people ever go. On one hand the city of Copenhagen on the other hand Amager. The aim of the project is to tie all these opposing forces together, forming an identity for a new place in Copenhagen. We want to turn it into a place in itself – a destination where people will travel to. Most of the recently built power plants are merely functional boxes, wrapped in an expensive gift paper. The main " function " of the façade is to hide the fact that factories are having a serious image / branding problem. We want to do more than just create a beautiful skin around the factory. We want to add functionality! The ambition of creating added value in terms of added functionality does not stand in contrast to the ambition to create beauty. It does not have to be either / or – it can be both! We propose a new breed of waste-to-energy plant, one that is economically, environmentally, and socially profitable. Instead of considering Amagerforbrænding as an isolated object, we mobilize the architecture and intensify the relationship between the building and the city – expanding the existing activities in the area by turning the roof of the new Amagerforbrænding into a ski slope for the citizens of Copenhagen. Now is the time to re-brand the factory.

The Shard
A new landmark for London Western Europe’ s tallest building
is inaugurated
Western Europe’ s tallest building, The Shard, has been formally inaugurated in London, in the presence of His Excellency Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassem Bin Jabor Al Thani, Prime Minister of Foreign Affairs of the State of Qatar and HRH Prince Andrew Albert Edward, the Duke of York.
The inauguration represents the culmination of a 12-year journey to build a significant new landmark on the London skyline. Designed by renowned master architect Renzo Piano and developed by Sellar Property, The Shard stands at 310m( 1,016 ft). The Shard’ s 95-stories will become a“ vertical town” comprising office space, residences, restaurants and a five star Shangri-La Hotel. The building will also house the capital’ s highest public viewing gallery, The View from the Shard, which will offer 360 º views of London stretching for over 40 miles, opening on February 1st 2013.
The Shard is the highly visible landmark at the heart of London Bridge Quarter, a 2-mile square foot gross mixed-use development which, once complete, will create more than 12,000 jobs. London Bridge Quarter is a key part of the regeneration of this part of London and benefits from access to one of London’ s key transport hubs, London Bridge Station. The development has transformed London Bridge Station, delivering a new bus station and train station concourse that will be linked by a central plaza when it opens in 2013. This plaza will also link The Shard to its sister building, The Palace, a new 17 story HQ building due to be completed in Spring 2013. the-shard. com
