“Darling. Your dinner's in the microwave. You should come get it.”. the soft voice trails through the dark clouds of smoke.
I threw the box, still cold from the refrigerator, onto the white tile floor. I tried to calm down but i could feel the anger building up inside of me. It was like a match had been thrown into a dark wood furnace.
I walked into the living room to find her sitting on the ugly brown recliner. It moaned and groaned each time she made an inch of movement. I could see her lovely black hair rolling around in waves on her shoulders. I could still smell the smoke.
I walked across the small living room and grabbed a handful of her hair. I raised my hand until she rose to her feet. I could see the look of pain in her eyes.
I started down the dimly lit hallway. The walls had some very ugly yellow paper, and it was peeling in places. Sometimes the lines along the wall zig zagged until it reached another line, and then it swerved, and then it ran, and then, it would stop altogether, and your mind would find a new line to trace.
I forgot the wallpaper and led her down the hall. My hand still firmly gripped onto her soft hair. I took out the key to the bedroom. i could hear the tumblers click as i slid the key into the handle.
I opened the door and shoved her in. “I love you, but right now, I cannot even bear the mere sight of you.” The words slid out of my mouth before i could stop them.
I slammed the door shut and locked it before sliding down the wall next to it. My fingers fiddled with the peeling wallpaper as I thought the same words over and over. I. am. a. monster.
