In males , from 110 to 180 pounds , the hanging testicles are presented as if they ’ re on a platter , in the open palm of the exhibitor ’ s hand . The judge wisely stands his distance .
The first two Fila specialties were judged by Brazilian experts Gutenberg Vilar Soares and Andre Rafael Plentz , and the national was adjudicated by well-known Fila breeder Pedro Gonzalez Teja from Guatemala . His choice was an 18-monthold female , Ch . Pérola das Tabocas Dos Filas .
The Fila was not the only Brazilian breed to be seen that weekend . The little Brazilian Terrier , the other native breed recognized by the FCI ( Federacion Cynologique International ), also had an independent specialty , judged by Carlos Capone . This lively , alert dog owes its prey instincts to its presumed Fox Terrier and Jack Russell Terrier ancestors , allegedly mixed with a bit of Miniature Pinscher . It is tri-colored and docked , and their popularity tends to be limited to Brazil .
Other Unusual Dogs
In addition to the two formally recognized Brazilian breeds , there were two other unusual dogs that few outside the country
have even seen ! Here ’ s some background as to why : The FCI accepts 10 Groups . The Sunday show was the FCI show where winners are awarded CACIBs ( certificates of beauty ) toward an international championship . The Friday and Saturday shows were Pan-American shows , which offered national championships . At these shows , an 11th Group is designated , consisting of breeds that are not FCI-recognized . This included the American Pit Bull Terrier and two similar breeds , one of which is unique to Brazil .
The American Bully resembles an American Pit Bull Terrier on steroids . It is claimed that the American Bulldog , English Bulldog and Olde English Bulldogge were used in its creation around 1990 . It was recognized by the UKC in 2013 . Like the American Staffordshire and the Pit Bull , their ears are often cropped . Although the breeders of American Bullys stress their gentle nature , it is whispered they are sometimes used in Brazil for dog fighting .
The Bulldogue Campeiro , or “ country bulldog ,” is another bully breed . Exceedingly rare , it looks like a muscular Dogue de Bordeaux on shorter legs . Its tail is short and crooked , reminiscent of its Bulldog origins . Built for stamina and strength , they were originally used to capture wild oxen , round up pigs and used as guard dogs on remote Brazilian farms . During the 18th century , various types of Bulldogs , such as the Olde English Bulldogge , accompanied European immigrants to Brazil , settling in rural communities , where this rustic breed developed . Big-boned and weighing 70 to 90 pounds , their grotesque appearance is meant to frighten trespassers .
The All-Breed Shows
Eight judges were required for the three all-breed shows . There was Shirley Atalla and Jose Medeiros from Brazil , Juan Carlos Ferraro from Argentina , Doreen Duffin from Australia , Myrna Shiboleth from Israel , Guatemala ’ s Pedro Teja , Edd Embry Bivin from the US and myself , Mike Macbeth from Canada .
Puppies and Juniors are not judged at Group level . Instead each Best Puppy ( or Junior ) in Breed goes directly to the Best in Show ring at the end of the day . It takes four show
