REMAIN FOCUSED
By Deborah L. Osborne
In the current season of environmental, political and social
unrest, it is very easy to become overwhelmed, anxious, and
preoccupied. Many of us are experiencing the “tingling” of
apprehension and fear of the unknown, as we remember
historical events. With 24/7 news outlets and social media –
keeping us focused on news events as soon as they occur or
are fabricated – all our senses are immersed in a constant
whirlwind of noise. Our thoughts can be scattered here, there,
and everywhere.
It seems that the trajectory of humankind shifted dramatically
in November 2016. One day we were filled with hope for our
collective future, and the next we were filled with despair. Since then, we have
been drenched with negativity, dread, hatred, and a myriad of other negative words
and actions – seen and/or experienced, first-hand on the streets and through social
media. This over-saturation may have caused some of us to lose focus, lose hope,
feel helpless, concerned and worried for our family, friends, and communities.
It is important, amid all the events taking place, that we remain focused. We have
a purpose – a purpose that we were born to fulfill – for the betterment of our
people, and to bring glory to God. There are many who depend on us to lead. WE
must set the examples and impart strong values to the next generation, to help
move us to the next level. Whether we are teachers, scientists, artists, fashionistas,
counselors, politicians, or doctors (to name a few), we have a purpose. Our
responsibility is to fulfill our purpose, by whatever means necessary! The truth of
the matter is…God has made us great! Our circumstances have never prevented,
or quieted, our greatness. The “chatter” has never stopped us. We were born to
forge ahead, despite the storms surrounding us, to instill love, faith, pride, hope,
and tenacity into those around us – no matter what it looks like.
Whether it be through prayer, meditation, or sitting quietly, it is essential that we
take the time to shut out the distractions, calm ourselves, clear our minds, and
allow ourselves to think, plan, and just – be!
The distractions are interruptions, disruptions, and agitations – designed to divert
us from the most important matters at hand – and fixated on the negative. It is
VITAL that we remain focused on what is important. Our children are depending
on us. Our peers are depending on us. Our elders are depending on us. God is
depending on us!
