D-RED FACULTY HIGHLIGHT Dr. Michel A. Reece Associate Professor Electrical and Computer Engineering Schaefer Engineering Building Room 336 443-885-4732 [email protected] Background Information: Dr. Michel A. Reece is currently an associate professor within the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. She became the first female recipient at Morgan State to obtain her doctorate degree in Engineering in 2003. She received her B.S from Morgan in 1995 and her MS from Penn State in 1997, both in Electrical Engineering. Previously, she served as a post- doctoral researcher of the Microwave Systems Section of the RF Engineering Group at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory Space Department. She has worked at other companies such as Northrop Grumman and Boeing (formerly known as Hughes Aircraft Company). She has a passion for education where she has developed curriculum for the RF Microwave Engineering concentration offered at MSU. She is extremely passionate about increasing the number of minority students who pursue the field of RF/Microwave Engineering. The field of RF Microwave Engineering is quite challenging and most students avoid this area. However, through her efforts and others before her, Morgan State University has produced a significant number of minority students with backgrounds in RF Engineering. Our Microwave Engineering program is unique among our nation’s HBCU’s (historically black colleges and universities) and TWIs (traditionally white institutions). In 2008, she wrote and won a competitive NSF Course, Curriculum, Laboratory Improvement (CCLI) grant to establish an undergraduate microwave engineering lab facility. Prior to this grant, no dedicated laboratory existed for undergraduate students to obtain working knowledge of common microwave engineering equipment and tools. As a result, students who enroll in microwave-based courses can utilize equipment that RF engineers use in the field and they can also receive Content-Level Certification from Keysight Technologies. She has also taught as an adjunct faculty member at Johns Hopkins University Engineering Professionals Program. She was also a faculty members from MSU to participate in a nationwide NSF-sponsored program, OURS, first of its kind, to promote women leadership in academia among HBCUs.
