Behind the Cala Joncols Resort you
find the smallest winery in Catalonia
not from a battery farm, but „home-made“. A
wellness area has been added, the lobby has
been pimped up and the physical well-being
is of great importance. This includes a mul-
ti-course menu for lunch and dinner well as
the in-house wines.
Those, on request, as well as a very special
kind as Vin de Mar. The two hotel owners and
brothers are the inventors of the sea wine
and it amazes many an expert. About ten
years ago they started with their crazy idea:
at the house reef they sank cages with wine
bottles to wait and see what would become of
them after several months. The boxes were
at a depth of twelve meters and during our
nudibranch sessions – the bay is well known
known for these critters, we dived around
the sunken bottles. The idea was really
successful, that now right behind behind the
resort area itself, they are running their own
vineyard. „Everything from our own hands
and it is the smallest vineyard in Catalonia,
a little less than one hectare in size,“ Manuel
emphasizes with a smile.
The good wine is not cheap and after months
under water it wears a very special outfit: the
bottles are covered with mussels and other
marine animals. Each one is unique and
even without contents still something very
special, an eye-catcher.
And so the target group has changed some-
what. In former times Cala Joncols was a
pure diving stronghold, today the divers only
represent about one third of the clientele. It is
remarkable that the resort is the least visited
by the neoprene loving guild in the high sea-
son. Indeed the most divers come in the pre-
