What to do on Land / Caleta de Fuste
Just south of Caleta de Fuste is the historic salt farm by the sea . In today ‘ s museum ( below right ), you can see how important the salt trade used to be – and how arduous .
Within sight is the small , quiet Los Caracolitos : our ultimate restaurant tip for Caleta de Fuste . If you prefer a short walk , Castillo has international restaurants and , of course , pubs and bars .
Around 25 kilometres towards the west coast , behind a mountain ridge , lies the beautifully restored former island capital of Betancuria . Founded in 1405 , it is the oldest town on Fuerteventura . It doesn ‘ t take long to stroll through the pretty historic houses , but it ‘ s still worth it . The small church is also a museum ( left below ). The excursion can be combined with a visit to the Museo del Queso Majorero near Antigua ( top left ). There you will not only learn all about the island ‘ s typical Majorero cheese , but also about the special goat species of Fuerteventura . Pretty : the botanical garden with huge cacti .
The road leads up to the Mirador de Morro Velosa . At 650 metres above sea level , there is a great view of the northern part of Fuerte , a restaurant with a terrace and a small museum on the geology and formation of the island .
