IIn today ‘ s holiday resort of Castillo , which is named after the old fortress tower , not many more than a dozen people lived on the edge of the bay around eight , perhaps only seven decades ago . Families who lived from fishing and owned land that at the time was little more than a barren , sandy plot of land that stretched right down to the shore .

So much for the history , of which nothing remains apart from the tower . Today there is a marina right by the sea , chic hotels , flats , restaurants , bars and small shops in the vilage – and the Deep Blue Diving Centre on the marina pier right at the exit of the bay .
Anyone wondering why here , eight kilometres south of Fuerteventura airport , the holiday village is basically limited to the area between the coastal road and the bay : it is rocky in both directions and swimming is impossible .
