Andrew Scott Johnson Memorial Scholarship

Distinguished Recipient • High School
Mauricio Viana is a recent high school graduate, earning a cumulative 3.09 GPA from
Cypress Bay High School in Weston, Florida. Mauricio is the son of Humberto Viana, Vice
President, JD Backhoe, Inc., and Maria “Vicky” Guzman. He is this year’s distinguished
high school recipient of the Andrew Scott Johnson Memorial Scholarship Foundation’s
$7500 scholarship. In the fall, Mauricio will enroll as a freshman at Loyola University in
New Orleans, Louisiana with plans to earn a degree in Music Education and become
a music teacher and director. Mauricio’s academic accomplishments include Weston
Philharmonic Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society, Cypress Bay Leadership Award and
Academic Excellence recipient and Cypress Bay Band Director’s Award. In addition to his
academic accomplishments, Mauricio has also received special recognition for being the
Cypress Bay Marching Band Saxophone Section Leader and Head Quarter Master as well
as the Indoor Percussion-Vibrophone Section Leader.
Teachers describe Mauricio as a gifted musician, humble, down-to-earth, creative,
unselfish, respectful, analytical, reflective, persevering, and possessing a great internal
drive. He is a compassionate young man who is always willing to help.
Mauricio’s extracurricular activities include wind ensemble, men’s chorus, mixed chorus,
jazz band, concert band and Tri-M Music Honor Society. He was also an ARC Broward
special education music volunteer and a Young at Art Museum volunteer.
Mauricio has dedicated more than 200 hours as a volunteer at the Young at Art Museum
and has demonstrated his compassion for his community by playing jazz music for
holocaust survivors at a local senior group home and for a disability youth group.
Outside of school and community service, Mauricio enjoys frisbee, musical instrument
repair and music tutoring.
