First District Dr . Janine Burkhardt
Organized dentistry to me means community . I am involved through the American Dental Association tripartite , through the Academy of General Dentistry , through PA Association of Community Health Centers , and the National Network for Oral Health Access . Each of these organizations is unique in helping to meet the needs of my practice through direct resources or advocacy . But the one commonality among all of them is the support system they all provide . It ’ s a great feeling to know I am always part of a community of dentists that have my back .
I joined the ADA during signing day at school along with most of my class . While I was a “ member ,” I wasn ’ t really taking full advantage of the membership benefits , and I ’ m not sure I really knew at the time what they were . But it seemed like the thing to do ! I made the active decision to join the AGD and NNOHA a few months after graduation when I accepted a position as dental director for a new health center . It was clear that I was going to need help !
Dr . David Tecosky was working near my office , saw me on a new members list , and reached out . Dave encouraged me to get involved . I joined him at a local PAGD meeting where I knew he would be in attendance . Shortly after , the Philadelphia County Dental Society was holding a meeting , and I felt comfortable attending as I knew Dave would be a familiar face there . Everyone was so welcoming . Before I knew it , Dr . Renee Fennell had signed me up on a committee , and the rest is history !
I am so grateful to Dave and Renee , as without the personal welcome , I don ’ t know that I would have taken true advantage of my memberships in organized dentistry . I have gotten the most out of them through involvement as an active member . Without these connections , I ’ m not sure I would have been as comfortable taking the first step to show up to a local meeting .
I have found so much value in organized dentistry . I want others to feel the same sense of value . Instead of asking “ why should I be a member ?” have them ask “ why wouldn ’ t I join ?”
My goal is to continue the successful revamp that we have been doing for our society and strive to promote the value of membership so we can retain and recruit members . We are re-activating committees , enhancing our publications and marketing , and holding more events in order to meet our members and create a sense of local community . My first year as president was so encouraging . We have heard from our members that they are really enjoying our offerings , and that only motivates us to do more !
Membership in organized dentistry is one thing , but true involvement is even better . Becoming an active member involved at the local , state , and national levels not only enables you to see the true value of membership , but it allows you to shape the future . If you don ’ t have a personal connection encouraging you to show up to your first meeting like I did , just show up ! You will find many friends there .
I have found so much value in organized dentistry . I want others to feel the same sense of value .
