#Metoo Case Study
See appendix 7 for case study back-
ground.
The #metoo hashtag was created by
actor Alyssa Milano. On social me-
dia Milano wrote, “If women came
together and to each person sexual
harassment or assault has effected
wrote a “me too” status, this would
indicate to use and others the scale of
the problem”. (Khomami, 2017). This
created a movement between women
to speak out about their own experi-
ences off sexual harassment on social
media. The #metoo hashtag empow-
ers women and this sense of empow-
erment enables women who have
kept quiet for so long to talk about
their experiences and create a stand
against inappropriate behaviour from
men. Most remarkably, “Facebook
said that within 24 hours, 4.7 million
people around the world engaged in
the #metoo conversation, with over
12m posts, comments, and reactions”.
(Khomami, 2017). This shows how
social media can be a powerful plat-
form for feminism as it spreads the
movement. Once someone shares
their sexual harassment experience
other females feel empowered and do
the same. Social media allows women
to feel empowered, safe and therefore
encourages feminism movements.
