was founded in 1929 and began as an employee-owned company, providing essential home delivery services for milk and other dairy products; such as eggs, cottage cheese, ice cream, etc., during a time when grocery stores were less accessible. At its peak, Twin Pines delivered over 155,000 quarts of milk daily across more than 300 routes. Twin Pines became a beloved part of Detroit's community, with many residents fondly recalling the glass bottle deliveries. Having a Detroit zip code where I lived, our family was able to have home delivery of this company. Twin Pines Dairy in Detroit ceased operations in 1977.
This next business was very well-known here in Michigan. Mountain Jack's restaurants were once popular dining spots in Michigan, including locations in Dearborn Heights. However, the chain had multiple locations across Michigan, including nearby areas. Mountain Jack's restaurants in Michigan began operations in 1978. There were as
many as 21 locations of the chain before it filed for bankruptcy in 2008. Besides all types of steaks, they also had ribs, chicken, chops, seafood, Caesar salad, amazing desserts, and many other things.
This next business is called Sambo’s restaurant. In almost every section of Michigan, you would be able to find a Sambo's. The chain, which began in California in 1957, expanded significantly throughout the 1960s and 1970s, with 100 locations in Michigan and 1,100 nationwide. There were two Sambo’s in the city of Taylor, one on Eureka Road, and the other one was on Telegraph Road. One popular meal served at this chain was the "Papa Jumbo" breakfast, which included juice, eggs, bacon or sausage, and six pancakes. The menu included a variety of options such as fried chicken, hamburgers, and salads. Sambo's restaurants preceded Denny's in Michigan, which had similar menus. All Sambo's restaurants in Michigan closed in 1982.
