Iconic Businesses Long
Gone—Part Five

When growing up in the 60s and 70s, life was much different back then, especially customer service. I remember that you never had to pump your own gas, because someone would do that for you, plus add oil if you were down a quart, inflate your car tires, and even wash your car windshield. Also, at the grocery stores after you were done shopping and heading out the door to your car, sometimes individuals would meet you at your car and help you put your grocery bags in the trunk of your car for a small tip of 25 to 50 cents.
So, a lot of these businesses I am writing about from back then were much different from today’s businesses, where it’s hard to believe these businesses are long gone. Sometimes when a business is turned over to a family member of the founder who maybe passes away or just
retires, the family or new owner may not run it the same way by putting the customer first like the founder did, and the business becomes defunct because the customer knows something has changed.
Anyway, this first former business is the Twin Pines Farm Dairy, where I remember as a kid seeing them deliver milk and other grocery items to our house and the surrounding neighborhoods. Some people had milk chutes on the side of their house where the delivery driver would open a small door and place the items in there, where the homeowner could open an interior door inside their home and retrieve these items, while some people just had them left on the steps in front of their front door.
Now, the Twin Pines Dairy Company
