Look closely and you’ll discover bloodroot with its delicate white petals, or the puff y little blooms of the aptly named Dutchman’s breeches, the precious pinks and lavenders of the tiny hepatica, plus rue anemone and more. And that’s just the First Act! Drum roll! Second Act − 32,000 new early spring bulbs! Crocus, daff odils, dwarf hyacinth and many, many more. A map awaits visitors to show all of the plantings. Peak is expected to be in the next two weeks. Now the crescendo builds for the much-awaited Th ird Act − an eye-popping tulip display comprising 40,000 plants in 86 varieties in the Annual Garden, terrace gardens and entry areas! Th is year’s garden theme is “Fresh & Fruity,” refl ect- ing a tangy palette of colors - lemon, cherry, peach, creamy white and unusual lime tones. Look for these beauties in late April-early May. Arboretum landscape gardener Duane Otto has timed the garden plantings to provide more continual spring blooms and he has incorporated 4,000 pansies, Johnny Jump-Ups, snapdragons, trilliums, scillas, croci and hyacinths for added interest. Around Mother’s Day, the Arboretum’s crabapple collec- tion bursts into spectacular bloom along Th ree-Mile Drive. Shortly thereaft er, follow your nose through the fragrant lilac collection. And don’t miss the azaleas in their lovely spring fi nery. Need more reason to visit the Arboretum in spring? Bruce Munro: Winter Light at the Arboretum Now through April 9. Th is phenomenal large-scale out- door/indoor exhibition features thousands of radiant lights - a powerful experience of color and sound.
