How It Began 1861-1865
North & South
The war between the North and South was followed by Abraham Lincoln's election presidency in 1860. Over 600,000 americans were threatned by the excessive power of the Nothern Hemisphere. Lincoln called for 75,000 troops to end the Southerns rebellion after the Fall Of Sumter in 1861. The North had to conquer vast territories and break the will of the southern
Nobody was ready for the revolution of warfare brought by the process of military technology. They did not appreciate how the enchancement of firepower provided by the widespread use of rifled msukets gave an unfair advantage to forces on the defensive . Even though the war was intentionally suppose to be on the battlefield, the diplomatic contest was still important.
The Problem
France & Britian
By 1860 both Great Britian and France thought the United States as a check against the determination of other European powers. Both had strong and econmic independence with both North and South. Both Frnace and Britian needed southern cotton to feed their rag trade(Industries involved in the devolpement), yet both countries had investments in northern land.
Southerns went to war feeling confident in the diplomatic area. The European powers found it diffcult to ressisit an opportuntiy to destory the U.S power in the hemisphere. The Europeans feared the over confidence of the confederancy the south underestimated Europeans determination. The British statesmen feared the North may take Canada. They had to face the fact these foreign adevetures was in the wake of the Crimean War
