Threatened Frogs of Ghana
Frogs play a critical role in rainforests as “ indicator species ” and are crucial to humans ’ understanding of nature . Extremely sensitive to changes in the environment , frogs provide insight into the health of the ecosystems they inhabit .
Ghana is home to approximately 80 recorded species of frogs — of which 10 are considered threatened . Habitat destruction , pollution , pesticides , climate change and a devastating fungal disease have taken a toll on these tiny amphibians . In fact , many species of frogs here may become extinct before scientists even know they exist .
