GROWING THE GARDEN

Plans for a grand new entrance and other improvements to reimagine Sherman Library & Gardens were announced during an event at the Corona del Mar venue in May . More than half of the $ 13 million needed for the project has already been raised , with initial funds from Anton and Jennifer Segerstrom and the Samueli Foundation ; additional contributions are sought as the Grow the Gardens Campaign continues . Groundbreaking is set for summer 2025 and the project is expected to take 16 to 18 months . The goal is to increase visibility along Pacific Coast Highway as the site is currently surrounded by unwelcoming walls . New plans call for a large arched entrance with a bell tower above it . To create another access point , the venue ’ s garden-to-table restaurant will be moved from the interior to the edge along Coast Highway — with a second-floor patio added for more dining space . The tropical conservatory and shade house , which are both highly utilized for education programs , will be renovated to protect the health of the orchids and other valuable plant collections showcased there . The historic integrity of each structure will be respected while breathing new life into these spaces . Also , expanded education programs and areas will allow the nonprofit library and botanical garden to better interact with the community . ( 949-673- 2261 ; thesherman . org ) — Sharon Stello
