Scriptures , to the apostolic traditions and to the consensus … of the Fathers ,’ we profess that ‘ the sacraments of the new law … all instituted by Jesus Christ our Lord .’” 111
The sacraments of the Church are signs and symbols that “ do something ,” they reveal what or rather who is hidden , who is the Lord , God . They are “ sensible signs which at once communicate grace , declare it , and , as it were , place it before the eyes .” 112
The mysteries of Christ ’ s life are the foundations of what he would henceforth dispense in the sacraments , through the ministers of his Church , for ‘ what was visible in our Savior has passed over into his mysteries .’ 113
There are seven sacraments of the Catholic Church as defined in Canon one during the seventh session of the Council of Trent in 1547 , baptism , confirmation , Eucharist , penance , extreme unction ( known today as Anointing of the Sick ), order and matrimony . 114 God ’ s people take part in these sacraments in order to attain “ righteousness and salvation .” 115 The sacrament of baptism being the first encounter with Christ , fides . Faith professed in the waters of new life , where God ’ s people , once and for always , pass from death into eternal life , “ he who believes and is baptized will be saved ; but he who does not believe will be condemned ” ( RSV , Mk 16:16 ). The Fourth Lateran Council stating , “ the sacrament of baptism is consecrated in water at the
invocation of the undivided Trinity … and brings salvation to both children and adults when it is
