The City of Edinburgh is a diverse city with a lot of history in its architecture, it is only recently that the old and new architecture has started to blend together to create the Edinburgh that is known today. In the west end of the city;

especially in the Tollcross and Haymarket areas there have been several new developments especially in the business sector that have transformed the look of these areas, making them modern and relevant in today’s world.

This is not to say that there is not still plenty of the old architecture in these areas of the city, it is just that they are transforming into the modern whilst combining old buildings into the new design. The City of Edinburgh offers a very wide array of building types and sizes to suit everyone’s needs and wants and this is important because it allows the old buildings to be changed and renovated on the inside to suit what is now needed of them instead of what they were once intended for when they were first constructed.

“Relevant” is an important word that should be used to describe these changes in Edinburgh’s design as it is important for the city to remain relevant in these economical times where businesses are looking to grow and new businesses are looking to start from the bottom and work up to the top, and for this to happen the architecture and

design of the city has had to

change to accumulate this

need,

hence why new constructions have taken place recently and are still on going to provide widely available modern and contemporary office space, in the area of West Tollcross. To aid in Edinburgh’s infrastructure the council have decided to re-build the tram system which hasn’t been in place since 1956, this will improve the already excellent transport system found in the city and it will compliment the Lothian bus system praised by many. This new system will act as a way of re-modernising the city and making it more accessible to those who are unfamiliar with the city but also to those who have lived here all their lives. By doing this, the Scottish government is showing that Edinburgh is not only just a historic city, it is a modern and inviting Scottish city that deserves recognition in every industry, and it is a bold advertisement of things to come.
