Changing Edinburgh

Scotland’s capital, like other major cities of the UK, has seen many changes through the decades. Auld Reekie, as it is known among locals, got the name for the effect of all the factories that used to exist here or to be more specific; the smoke that would be produced by them. Where the skyline of Edinburgh used to be littered with huge chimneys, only one can still be seen. The largest of its type in all Europe, it serves now as a monument to a different way of life and sits in the centre of a newer housing development. There are numerous examples of similar things throughout the city, which incorporate both the old and the new asking us not only to remember the past but to embrace the future at the same time.
