Don’t Just Be Positive – Do It. “WE MAKE A LIVING BY WHAT WE GET. WE MAKE A LIFE BY WHAT WE GIVE.” P BY: JILL GORMLEY HUMAN RESOURCES DIRECTOR In a UnitedHealth Group survey of people who’d volunteered in the last year: —WINSTON S. CHURCHILL ress the pause button and ask yourself: What am I grateful for, and what can I do to help others? Life is hard. But when you take a step back and breathe, most of us realize we have a ton to be thankful for in our lives. Taking time to reflect on these positive things can help us find peace and pleasure from knowing that there is good in the world. Good things do happen. People do good things, and good things happen in your life. When you press pause and identify all that’s good in life, you benefit from positive psychological side effects. Now ask yourself this: how can you make a positive impact on your head and your heart? The answer is simple: by doing good. Our team at Deeley Insurance Group is thoughtful and reflective, but at our core, we are doers. We act. We solve. We give. We jump in and figure out how to make a difference. We think positive and do good. Here’s why that makes a difference. PUTTING PROBLEMS IN PERSPECTIVE Through Deeley Serves, our team gets to see firsthand many of the challenges our fellow humans face. We see resilience and triumph. It also gives us a good perspective on the blessings we have. Within our own lives, many of the problems that we face today are problems that we will overcome and look back on with a sense of achievement. We survived because we were strong enough to get through it. Whatever we are confronting in life, taking a big- picture approach helps us recognize that however bad “it” seems, the situation won’t last forever. This mind-set also allows us to think pragmatically about how we’re going to make life better in the future. GIVING FEELS GOOD The act of giving has a powerful effect on the giver. In fact, a study by UnitedHealth Group identified people who had volunteered in the last year felt physically healthier and less stressed. Volunteering improved their mood. Whether you are giving your time, your expertise, or your money, the value is exponential to you and the recipient. That’s why each month our team selects a person or organization to support with a financial contribution. You can feel the power of the gifts, big and small. They have had an impact on the recipient but an even greater impact on us. 76% felt physically healthier POSITIVITY IS INTENTIONAL The choice to be positive is an intentional act. It doesn’t just happen. With each encounter you have with others, you must lean in to the positive and to the goodness that is possible. So, go ahead, do something positive today. + Jill Gormley is our Human Resources Director. She joined Deeley Insurance Group in 2017 with over 20 years of Human Resources experience.
