Saturday, December 21 Reading: Isaiah 38-39 ( 5 minutes) Short Reading: Isaiah 38:1-8 ( 1 minute) What was King Hezekiah’s prayer in this section and how did God answer his prayer? In chapter 39, Hezekiah foolishly showed a Babylonian delegation everything in his kingdom. His confidence was in the riches of his storehouse and perhaps the attention he received from Babylon and not in the Lord. As result, God’s judgment was that as Hezekiah had hidden nothing from Babylon, so nothing would be left in Jerusalem and carried off to Babylon. This is the first time that Isaiah expressly mentions Babylonian captivity. Captivity would be a part of their future history, but their future history would also include the coming of the Messiah. The coming Servant of the Lord is a big theme and focus of the rest of Isaiah’s message (40-66). 14
