Health Losing weight this season The healthy and sustainable way! by Patience O. Legoale Most people usually become concerned about their body weight in the beginning of each year, after a period of over-eating and drinking. As Christian we should set an example of excellence to the rest of the world in every aspect of our lives. Our bodies are the physical means which we have been given to present ourselves to the world as a witness to God's glory. Paul reminds us in I Corinthians 6:19-20 (NKJV) to glorify God in the body: Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body… South Africa is a country with a large number of overweight people. The reality is that the number of people who are overweight due to medical problems is a very small minority. For the rest there are many other reasons why they are overweight, which could include overeating. And, being overweight or obese destroys a person’s life. As Christians we should set an example of excellence to the rest of the world in every aspect of our lives, including our bodies. In Proverbs 23:20 -21 it is stated: "Do not mix with winebibbers, or with gluttonous eaters of meat; for the drunkard and the glutton will come to poverty," … Being overweight impact on so many levels of our lives: • It is associated with premature death. • It increases the risk of various diseases such as Cardiovascular Diseases, Diabetes Mellitus Type 2, Hypertension, Masculo skeletal, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, cancer, etc • It lessens our confidence and makes u less joyful. • It causes preliminary aging. • It impacts on the quality of our lives. • It ruins our Christian witness because it destroys our body, steals our energy and is a public proof of a lack of self-control. 14
