president of Women Anglers of Minnesota and
is currently a member of the Minnesota Fishing
Roundtable—a DNR think tank that discusses
critical angling issues, identifies problems, and
proposes solutions to preserve good fishing in
Minnesota.
Smith lives in the Twin Cities, but considers the
waterways of Central Minnesota some of her
favorite places to fish. “There are lots of lakes Up
North, and lots of fish,” she says, “So, if you’re not
having luck on one lake you can try another.”
Fishing Licenses
In her books, “Brainerd Whitefish Area Fishing
Guide: Where the Experts Fish and How,” “Brainerd
Mille Lacs Area Fishing Guide: Where the Experts
Fish and How” and the “Twin Cities Fishing Guide,”
Smith both points out the hot fishing spots, and
offers advice on how to find fish.
To legally fish in Minnesota waters, anglers
between the ages of 16 and 89 must have
a current Minnesota fishing license unless
they have a military service, nursing home
resident or other exemption.
Fishing licenses can be purchased online
through the Department of Natural
“A lot of people may not realize this, but there
is actually a perfect water temperature for the
species of fish you are after, and I list these in my
books,” she says.

In addition to her two fishing guides, which
have been updated several times over the years,
Smith has also published two map books. “Twin
Cities Shore Fishing Guide: West” and “Twin Cities
Shore Fishing Guide: East” are designed to make
it easy for anglers to locate the general areas
where fish should be biting. “There was too
much information to put it all in just one book,”
she says.
