The retired Brainerd High School and Middle School math teacher used to only work as a guide during the summer months, but now that he is retired from teaching he has more time to spend on the water. “For most of us (fishing guides), it’s a supplemental job we’ve done for years. It’s very rewarding. It’s fun to take people out,” says Belgum, who adds that the biggest benefit to hiring a fishing guide rather than trying to go out and find fishing spots on your own is that with a guide you are guaranteed to see some action. “We have a really good time,” he says. “People really enjoy the fact that they can get in someone else’s boat, and they don’t have to worry about whether the motor is going to start because it is already up and running. Mainly they hire us because they want a guarantee they are going to catch fish.” Belgum says that generally the larger lakes, like Gull, the White Fish chain, North Long, Pelican and Mille Lacs, are the best places to fish for such species as walleye, bass, Northerns and muskies.
