Across the peninsula near the city of Tetouan, Royal Golf Cabo Negro is tucked between the Mediterranean and the Rif Mountains, the landscape of its 18 holes a blend of dunes, pine forest and rolling hills.
FEZ, MEKNES AND IFRANE Former capitals Fez and Meknes in Morocco’ s historic heartland both have golf.
There are two 18-hole courses in Fez. The Cabell Robinsondesigned Royal Golf Fes lies in the middle of a vast olive grove, the Middle Atlas peaks visible from its undulating fairways with six lakes to test golfers.
Much of Oued Fes Golf’ s course is laced by sinuous water features. The 18-hole eco-responsible golf course was designed by Scottish architect Jonathan Gaunt.
Noria Golf Club
The hilly course, modified in 1939 then renovated in 2001 by Peter Harradine, cuts through tall cypress, pine, fir and eucalyptus trees. From the elevated 5th green you can see the rooftops of Tangier, called the White City for its whitewashed houses.
Just south of Tangier, Al Houara Golf Club is part of a resort complex that includes the opulent Hilton Tangier Al Houara Resort & Spa. Its challenging design by Graham Marsh and Vijay Singh opened in 2021 along with a nine-hole par-3 course and overlooks the Atlantic.
Nine-hole Meknes Royal Golf Club is Morocco’ s most unusual course. The only enclosed golf course in Africa, it is laid out inside the walled gardens of the city’ s royal palace. Flowers, olive trees, palm trees and fruit trees edge its holes while storks nest on the rose-coloured, crenelated walls.
An hour from Fez in the Middle Atlas Mountains, Michlifen Resort & Golf was opened by Morocco’ s Prince Moulay Rachid in 2018 in alpine town Ifrane, known as“ Little Switzerland”, with the first Jack Nicklaus Signature Course in North Africa and a luxury Swiss-style chalet hotel.
The 9th and 18th holes share a large double green that gives sweeping vistas over the surrounding mountainscape. At 1,650 metres( 5,413 feet) high, Michlifen’ s seasons are reversed compared with Marrakesh and it gets occasional snow in winter.
