having to pay the killer fees . People only think of all the big courses but around every big one there are always excellent courses you can add to the list . They give you a real feel for true Scottish golf . Of course , St . Andrews is special but I am just as happy to meet anyone and play courses from Dunbar to Brora or Machrie .
DG : All eyes will be on St . Andrews in 2022 , as the 150th Open will be staged there . With the pent-up demand for golf at the moment how important do you think this event will be for driving golf tourism back to Scotland ?
SL : I think people in general are keen to start travelling again . There ’ s a good chance golf in Scotland will pick up with travel from within the UK , but travel from abroad is almost impossible , so nobody knows what 2022 is going to bring us . But yes Q &, the A 3 Open - SANDY has a big LYLE influence and of course golf in Scotland speaks for itself . Every week in Pro- Ams my playing partners talk about how desperately they want to come and play or where they ’ ve been . I love encouraging them to mix the kind of courses when they come . Play a couple of big courses but don ’ t kill yourself trying to get them all in . Experience the lesser known courses and come away feeling good .
DG : I ’ m always fascinated to ask professional golfers about how many holes in 1 and / or course records they have .
SL : Gosh , I know I ’ ve had 16 holes in one but as for course records I haven ’ t got a clue .
DG : If you could play one course for the rest of your life , where would it be and why ?
SL : Wow , that ’ s a difficult one . I could play Augusta again and gain or St . Andrews but again , there are so many other courses I could add to that list . They ’ re all for different reasons .
DG : Who is the best player that you have ever played with and why ?
SL : Definitely playing with Jack Nicklaus in the final round of the 1986 Masters when he won at the age of 46 , shooting a 65 .
DG : Who would make up your dream fourball ? SL : Seve , Jack Nicklaus , Lee Trevino and of course myself .
