Terceira
Built in 1954, by members of the American Air Force, Terceira is situated close to Angra do Heroísmo, the capital of the island. Towering Japanese Cedars, brightly-coloured flowers( particularly azaleas and hydrangeas), and strongly undulating terrain embrace the natural beauty of the Azores. The fairways can be generous but the trees are relentlessly unforgiving. The whole experience is enhanced by the black volcanic sand in the bunkers. The club is run by a tripartite group, consisting of representatives from the Regional Government of the Azores, the Azores Air Zone, and the American Command.
Batalha
Designed by Cameron & Powell, this 6,435-metre course is set close to an historic battle site, from which the course gets its name. This is the youngest course in the Azores, and it is an important addition as golf here becomes increasingly attractive. It is located on mountain slopes close to Ponta Delgada, and built on volcanic rock. It is a quality course brimming with colour and individuality, with greens often punched upwards above black, volcanic bunkers to make exciting targets. The ruins of traditional stone houses are scattered about, adding another unique flourish, and, if you want more excitement, there’ s a third nine here, too. A big, comfortable clubhouse looks over it all and out to the ocean.
