The basement needed to be carefully designed and constructed to work around the root zone of the tree , so it was crucial to make the most of every space on the lower ground floor , where light was allowed to flood in via specially designed light-wells . A restrained palette internally allowed the architecture to sing - a soaring steel and timber staircase took centre stage and the extensive glazing was used to maximum effect , throughout .

We incorporated special lighting details such as LED strips built into the staircase and colour-change strips built into walls , allowing the ambience of the house to be changed , according to mood . Bathrooms were designed to be simple but luxurious , featuring sanitary ware from CP Hart and tiles by Porcelanosa .
