Earthquake Safety Fair
Hosted by DBI on June 15, 2017, at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, the Earthquake Safety Fair focused on how
individuals and the City can become better prepared for the next major earthquake. Seismic experts expect that
San Francisco will experience a large-scale earthquake in the next 30 years.
More than 600 people attended the event, which included speakers from various City agencies and workshops on
topics ranging from seismic retrofitting to fire safety that drew full capacity attendance. The day brought together
property owners, contractors, design professionals and City employees.
Accessible Business Entrance Program
Established by City ordinance, the Accessible Business Entrance Program took effect in 2017. The new initiative
focuses on improving physical access to goods and services offered throughout the city for people with disabilities.
The new program creates a Disability Access Compliance Unit within DBI, and the Department will work jointly with
Public Works, the Planning Department, and the Office of Small Business to implement the program.
Businesses covered by the ordinance are divided into four categories and compliance requirements are scheduled
over four years, with the first compliance deadline set for May 23, 2018. With approximately 27,000 properties
impacted, the recently launched Accessible Business Entrance Program is one of the largest citywide outreach
efforts undertaken by DBI. Additional details are available at sfdbi.org/businessentrance.
