Habitat:
Common understory species in the Westside forests of the Pacific Northwest. Found on moist sites in the sun or shade from southwest British Columbia south to northern California (Randall et al 1988).
An erect shrub up to 20’ tall. Leaves circular in outline, averaging 2” to 4” in diameter, with 5 to 9 fanlike lobes which are serrated along the margins. Green on the upper surfaces, paler underneath. Flowers red on terminal clusters. Fruit a propeller like, double like samara with wings at 180 degrees. Twigs smooth and round, green to reddish brown (Randall et al 1988).
