Evergreen huckleberry
Habitat:
Occurs on moist well drained sandy and loamy soils in the sun or shade. West side of the Cascades and Sierra Nevada Mountains from British Columbia to central California. Most abundant along the coast (Randall et al 1988).
Evergreen shrub to 10’ tall with small glossy waxy leaves. Leaves evergreen, 1/2” to 1 1/2” long, oval to oblong, thick and leathery, appear to be slightly folded. Dark waxy green above, paler and smooth below. Margins are finely serrate. Flowers are pink, 1/4” long in small clusters. Fruit round, to 1/4” in diameter. Twigs are slender, reddish brown and pubescent, later becoming smooth, ridged on younger growth (Randall et al 1988).
