Habitat:
Found on dry to moist well drained sites in the sun or shade; from British Columbia southward to northern California (Randall et al 1988).
Erect, everreen shrub 3' to 10' tall with dark glossy leaves. Leaves 6" to 12" long, alternate, pinnately compound with 5 to 9 leaflets. leaflets lanceolate to oval; dark glossy green above, paler underneath. Leaf margins have spins. Fruit dark blue berries 3/16" in diameter (Randall et al 1988).
