Inclusion and Engagement for Students of Color : Identifying Systemic Responsibility of Higher Education Institutions
Session Description : Universities are responsible for providing students with equal and equitable opportunities regarding a sense of belonging , inclusion , and engagement . Higher education institutions implementing inclusive engagement , community , and belonging are more likely to increase retention and promote a positive , diverse campus climate . Higher education institutions can alleviate stress for students of color by providing support strategies to reduce negative cultural and environmental experiences . Community is a crucial factor in supporting students of color success on college campuses . Colleges and universities will benefit students by incorporating diversity , equity , and inclusion practices within their culture , climate , policies , and practices .
Session Objectives :
1 . Recognize the importance of implementing and engaging a community approach to diversity , equity and inclusion , providing underrepresenting students the ability to engage more within the campus .
2 . Identify how to implement programming and support through the following strategies : inclusive engagement , community , and belonging .

Presenter Biography : Nicholas Payton is an Assistant Professor at Simpson College and a doctoral candidate at the University of Kentucky College of Social Work . His capstone explores the adverse effects of ADEI initiatives on Black graduate students . He holds degrees in social work , educational leadership , and college teaching . With extensive experience in social work , education , and student development , his practice focuses on mental health , policy , and curriculum . His research covers social justice , ADEI legislation , and BIPOC inclusion . A dedicated leader and advocate , Nicholas is committed to equity , collaboration , and empowering others to reach their full potential .
