Breakout Session 1 : 7:00 - 7:50 p . m . ET Track A : Setting the Stage to Engage Diverse Voices Session 1A : We Matter ! Tips and Tools for Fostering an Inclusive Work Environment
This session will focus on the results of a research study that examined the lived experiences of teachers of color employed in predominately White K – 12 schools . The findings revealed that teachers of color build networks with other teachers of color , engage in self-advocacy , and choose to ignore microaggressions . Through self-reflection and interactive activities , participants will be equipped with practices that will help them facilitate discussions and create inclusive and equitable systems .

Dr . Torine Champion has over 20 years of experience in education . She has served others in the following roles : teacher , teacher leader , campus administrator , professional developer , and college professor . Additionally , she graduated with a B . A . in Psychology , earned a M . Ed . in Curriculum and Instruction , and her Ed . D . degree in Organizational Leadership . Torine has a passion for serving and coaching others with the intention of helping them bring out the best in themselves and others . She has conducted research on equitable and inclusive practices for teachers of color . Torine is the mother of three daughters and enjoys reading , exercising , and spending time with family .
Tonya Dixon Tonya Dixon has been in education for over 20 years in various capacities . She has served as a teacher leader , classroom management and behavior consultant , director , and professional developer . Her outstanding contributions in the educational arena have not gone unnoticed . Tonya was selected as Teacher of the Year , during her time as a classroom teacher , and received many accolades along the way . Tonya has a genuine love for children and a true passion for supporting others ’ growth . Additionally , she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and earned a Master ’ s Degree in Educational Leadership and Administration . Currently , Tonya is a doctoral candidate and is conducting research on the impact of teacher induction programs .

We believe that the purpose of education is to liberate and equalize through transgression and activism . Student voices are the root of their own agency--their actions the branches for change . This presentation will offer systemic , instructional , and engaged activities and structures that center student voices , especially those in marginalized communities , to support students in seeking their own justice .
