Boys & Girls Aid

is the organization’ s unwavering belief that every child deserves lifelong stability and a loving family of their own.
When this organization was founded, one of the driving motivations was to find a way to decrease the delinquency of the children in the city. Rescuing homeless, neglected or abused children and keeping boys from reform school was a main purpose, typically in the form of foster care. This was a challenge at the time when Oregon was not child centered. Social tensions and problems existed and development worried many of the well-established residents. The founders persevered. As time went on The Boys &
Girls Aid expanded its assistance in adoption, protecting the most vulnerable children, aiding unwed mothers and more. It extended its reach and was often in rural areas to help place children on farms and to help them learn crafts and other tasks.
As time went on and society changed, there have been people who cared. That is still the same today. Boys & Girls Aid has stood the test of time and many children and families have benefited.
We at the Cypress Auxiliary try to do our part primarily by educating those in our community about the work we do and find ways to impact the well-being of children. Fundraising is an integral part of what we do. On Friday, March 13, we are planning a fundraising luncheon, so please save the date. More information will be in the January Villager.

Nonfiction Book Group
Charbonneau’ s nonfiction book group will not be meeting in December, though we will be back on Monday, Jan. 5 to discuss Walter Isaacson’ s biography about one of our nation’ s most unique Founding Fathers,“ Benjamin Franklin: An American Life.” He was an entrepreneur, scientist
and ultimately a statesman, but not a profound political thinker as his brethren who became America’ s famous presidents. He was a restless, relentless force for American democracy.
Our November book,“ In the Hurricane’ s Eye” by Nathaniel Philbrick, is a detailed, battle-by-battle account of the actions leading up to, and including, the battle of Yorktown, America’ s decisive victory that brought the Revolutionary War to a close. It was a challenging, desperate situation for George Washington leading a ragtag militia from New England to the Carolinas. Washington’ s negotiations with the French brought their ships to the fight, from across the Atlantic, the eastern seaboard and the Caribbean. This turned the tide from the depths of defeat to a resounding victory for the independence of the nation.
Our February book is“ Genghis Khan & the Making of the Modern World” by Jack Weatherford. We invite interested readers to join us in the Fireplace Room on the first Monday of the month. Questions can be directed to charbonneaubookgroup @ gmail. com.
