We can get so caught up in the holiday frenzy that we forget that our dogs don ’ t view the holidays in the same way we do . Here are a few suggestions for making this holiday season more enjoyable for you and your pet .
• Keep your dog ' s schedule as normal as possible . Routine gives your pet a sense of security . So many things have changed around the house ; decorations , guests , different smells and sounds . Keeping as many things as possible familiar and predictable can relieve some of the resulting anxiety for your pet .
• Inform your guests of what they can and cannot feed your dog . Many well-meaning guests will slip that cutie a morsel but a single piece of turkey skin is enough to send your dog to the vet with pancreatitis .
• Always supervise children . Make sure children understand that they shouldn ’ t bother the dog . Children love dogs but hugging or tormenting an already stressed dog can end in disaster . Dogs don ’ t see hugs the same way that humans do . They see it as dominance and a threat . The last thing you want is for your dog to react badly and cause an injury . If you can ’ t control the child , find the dog a safe place to relax like a bedroom or his crate .
• Be aware of your dog ' s signs of stress and help them get away . Stress signs include shivering or shaking , panting , pacing , turning away , yawning , whining , drooling , licking their chops , raising their back hair , or growling . Growling is good ! Don ’ t punish it . It ’ s a warning of an impending bite . Your dog is communicating with you . Learn what they are saying and help them cope . Freezing or becoming very still is the most common posture before a bite .
• Leave your dog at home or with a trusted friend or pet sitter for the big events . Parties , parades , and other large gatherings are extremely stressful for your dog . Just let them relax at home . They will be happy to see you and have a snuggle in front of the tree when you get home .
