Ask the Groomer ...
" I know some plants are dangerous to have around pets , but I am decorating for the holidays
"
. Which ones are toxic ?"
Answer : It ' s a lot of fun decorating and celebrating the holidays , but it ' s really important to be very careful selecting plants that are safe for our pets . Here are a few of the more common ones to watch out for :
POINSETTIA : According to The National Institutes of Health , poinsettias are not poisonous for humans . But while the ASPCA says the plant is " generally overated in toxicity ," it warns that it can cause illness , stomach upset , and occasional vomiting if ingested by pets .
MISTLETOE : Some species of this plant are more dangerous than others , but all are potentially harmful if they ' re brought into the house . They contain a substance called Phoratoxin , which can cause nausea , vomiting , stomach pain , diarrhea , blurred vision , a slow heart beat , and low blood pressure .
HOLLY : The shiny green leaves and bright red berries of holly are a cheerful and festive sight . But the most serious concern is the toxin in those holly berries . The toxin is present in the rest of the plant , too , but it ' s most concentrated in the berries . The red berries may be especially appealing to young children or pets , who often like to put things into their mouths . The toxin in holly is theobromine , an alkaloid chemical that is also found in cocoa and chocolate , and is quite similar structure to caffeine . Theobromine is especially dangerous for dogs because their bodies break it down very slowly . This is why chocolate is poisonous for them .
So enjoy the season , but be careful decorating with plants for the Christmas Holiday and keep our pets safe .
