Board Member of the Month – Andrew Martin , E . I . T .
Hello ASCE NH members ! My name is Andrew Martin , and I am pleased to introduce myself as the newly appointed ASCE NH Young Member Group Chair . I am very excited to be taking over this role and to be a part of this group ! I think the YM group provides a great opportunity for young engineers to network with one another , learn more about the industry , and to make some friends ! I have a lot of cool ideas for events and activities for the YM group and I can ’ t wait to start putting them in motion .
I graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a BS in Civil Engineering in 2017 and stayed to get my ME in Civil Engineering with a focus in Geotechnical Engineering in 2018 . Since graduating I have worked in geotechnical consulting . I have been a part of the WSP ( Golder legacy ) geotechnical team in Merrimack for a little over a year and before that I worked at GZA GeoEnvironmental in Bedford . As a geotechnical consultant I use samples collected in the field and results of field and laboratory tests to determine strength properties for in-situ soils and bedrock . I then use those properties to perform slope stability and settlement analyses , seismic site class and liquefactions calculations , and bearing resistance calculations for shallow and deep foundations . I am currently planning on taking the PE exam in the Spring of 2023 .
I was born and raised in NH and currently live in Bedford . In the spring through fall , I spend a lot of my free time playing rec sports including softball , volleyball , and flag football . Softball being my personal favorite since it ’ s the one sport that I play with my older brother . I mainly play in leagues around the Manchester area and occasionally I ’ ll play in weekend tournaments in different areas of the state . Once the temperatures drop and the snow starts to fall , I turn into a homebody . Winter is when I catch up on all the shows I heard about all year , play video games with friends , and do most of my reading for the year . The book series I ’ ve been into recently are The Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss and The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson . I ’ m always looking for new book recommendations and I love a good book swap !
My biggest passion is travelling abroad and my favorite way to do so is through volunteer abroad programs . I have done several of these programs , my latest two being to Peru and Zimbabwe , and I always get the greatest sense of fulfillment from them . Not only do these programs allow me to go to places that I want to visit , but they allow me to do it in a way where I am also giving something back to the people and communities that I am visiting . If you think you may want to do something like that some great organizations are IVHQ and Worldpackers . My love for volunteering is definitely something that I am going to try to incorporate as the Young Member Group Chair ( don ’ t worry not all the events will be work ). There are tons of local volunteer opportunities that I think would be great to get our young ASCE members involved with to give back to the community that we are all a part of .
If you made it this far , I appreciate you taking the time to read a little bit about me . Make sure to checkout the Young Member Corner section of the Newsletter for information on our upcoming events and I hope to meet you all at one of them !
