December 2020 Guide | Page 2

Message from the park board president

Dear friends and neighbors ,
This year has reaffirmed the importance of parks and recreation for our basic health and welfare . Most of all , it has helped us appreciate how much we enjoy seeing each other , even if it ’ s virtual or from a distance with our face masks hiding our smiles .
Three words come to mind as I reflect on all we ’ ve experienced together in 2020 . They are adaptability , resilience and gratitude . I believe these words describe how the park district has persevered and discovered new ways to be flexible and innovative . From helping a couple re-plan the perfect pandemic micro-wedding , to ensuring safe and fun recreation experiences , I commend our staff for finding new ways to meet the needs of our residents while navigating the ever-changing landscape of state and national guidelines to prevent the spread of the virus .
With the COVID-19 pandemic , many of us are finding new ways to celebrate favorite holiday traditions with our family . The Park District is no exception . In this guide , you ’ ll find new and re-imagined special events , which have been adapted to meet all current safety requirements . It is our goal to make the winter season an enjoyable one for you !
In response to the state ’ s Tier 3 mitigations which have paused many indoor recreation activities , the park district is providing ways to enjoy your favorite programs virtually . You can now livestream Park Center Health and Fitness group fitness classes . Keep up on your fitness goals and reconnect with your favorite instructors . New individual training opportunities and private lessons are also available at the Glenview Community Ice Center , the Glenview Tennis Club and Splash Landings .
Health and safety guidelines are constantly evolving , but one thing remains the same : the park district is committed to providing safe recreation opportunities to our community . Be sure to follow us on social media and subscribe to our community e-newsletter for real-time updates and new information .
The park district is thankful for the opportunity to provide you with so many programs , events , facilities and activities that make us a community . We ’ ve also been fortunate to be able to give back to and support our community in meaningful ways . Last summer , in the midst of COVID-19 , Historic Wagner Farm temporarily switched gears from providing public programming to growing crops as a working farm and providing food for those most affected by the pandemic . The farm ’ s “ Feeding Glenview ” initiative produced more than 20,000 lbs . of fresh fruits and vegetables and 6,000 lbs . of meat and eggs that were donated to the Northfield Township Food Pantry or sold as part of the farm ’ s Community-Supported Agriculture ( CSA ) initiative , in partnership with the Northern Suburban Special Education District .
This fall , the park district collaborated with Wesley Childcare and School District 34 to provide Camp REC , giving students an opportunity to engage in virtual learning with adult supervision and assistance as needed , as well as participate in games , sports , arts and crafts . With the recent Adaptive Pause , Camp REC participants will be able to attend Camp Rec during full school-day hours to continue their education uninterrupted . The quality staff and
