Consider shopping at local businesses for holiday gifts

Hello everyone . The month started out well for me as the bulb on the “ maintenance re-
NEWBORE
quired ” warning light on my car ’ s dashboard finally burned out . December is the month of Christmas and the theme of this issue is “ A season of giving .” Many of us pursue the true meaning of Christmas this month , while many , if not most of us , also worry about decorating and / or getting gifts for family and close friends . The retailers barrage us with ads , sales and “ deals ” to get us to buy items and most of us respond by purchasing more retail items than in any other month . I read somewhere a few years back that Christmas spending accounts for 7 % of our country ’ s gross net profit and Google says it accounts for one quarter of our personal spending . The charities step up their efforts to encourage
giving , and we increase our donations as a society and our volunteer services to truly make it a season of giving .
I encourage you to all think of our Village Center businesses when thinking of gifts : whether it be a gift certificate to one of our food establishments and salons , or items from the golf pro shop . I want to give a plug for our businesses , which include the Charbonneau Golf Club Pro Shop and Market Cafe , Charbonneau Salon and Spa , Corium 21 , Curry ’ s Landing Restaurant , Gather + Give , Sotheby / Hasson Realtors , Lux Sucre , Tufts Wealth Management , Touch of Jade Massage and Windermere Real Estate . Please visit these establishments this December .
In board and staff news , permitting was started on both Edith Green improvements and the new tennis and pickleball building ( Sports Center ). Given the required permitting time and the time to get steel for the Sports Center building , we are hoping to have it operational by next summer . The Edith Green sports court was refinished and a contractor proposal to construct two Bocce ball courts was received . This construction will not be able to start until our permits are received , however , which is looking like February or March of next year .
Bids were also received to refurbish the exterior of the Event Center . This project will replace the old leaking single-pane windows , replace siding that is full of
dry rot , and paint the building to blend in with the new Activity Center . This project has had money in our reserve fund for several years to pay for these repairs . The next phase of our security plan , which includes camera eyes in the Village and Sports Center , is in the process of being implemented . Future cameras will go up in our Event Center , RV lot , and marina . We are still working with the city to figure out a way to put cameras that are not in the right of way at our two entrances .
Our marina is now closed for the winter and hopefully next year we will be able to expand the parking lot , replace the old dock and start a kayak and paddle board club .
We received a free loan of a two-foot bronze statue of Sacajawea . Residents will recall that Jean Baptiste Charbonneau was the son of Sacajawea and the namesake of our community . The statue is on the front counter at the Activity Center , so please go take a look at it . We have an opportunity to purchase the similar six-foot bronze statue for exterior artwork which may be placed in the triangular landscaped area outside of the Event Center , Pro Shop , and Activity Center if we purchase it . This would likely be a resident-driven effort and volunteers are organizing to plan a fundraiser for this project .
One of our board objectives is to provide activities and social opportunities for our residents . The new Activity Center was constructed
to enable and encourage greater opportunities for residents to get out of the house and be active . I am happy to report that we have already booked over 1,800 events for 2023 and that does not include any outside events and the several individual events such as retirement or birthday parties or other shorter booking time events for which we receive weekly requests for room reservations during the year .
One of the more boring annual tasks for board members is preparing the following year ’ s budget . Yet it is critical , as it determines resident dues for the following year . It is easy to get lost in all the numbers and one almost needs a crystal ball to predict future costs . We all know inflation has been bad this year , averaging slightly over 8 % from the corresponding month the previous year . It looks like our dues will go up about $ 8 per month in 2023 . While I ’ m not happy with the amount of increase , with all that is going on right now , I am glad we are able to keep the increase to about the same rate as the inflation for the past year .
Tolling continues to be a concern and hopefully all your letters and some individual contacts with ODOT personnel and legislative members will help . Keep your fingers crossed on this one .
Speaking of Christmas giving and gifts , I remember last year when one of my family members received a box of batteries and the card read “ gift not included .” Happy holidays everyone .
