On the top of the Capitol dome stands Miss Freedom , a statue of a female figure who clasps a sword in her left hand and holds aloft a lighted torch in her right .
Miss Freedom is often mistaken for the Statue of Liberty , but the two statues are not the same . Although both symbolize freedom , the Statue of Liberty has a different headdress and carries a book rather than a sword .
The Georgia State Capitol does have its own Statue of Liberty . Donated by the Atlanta Council of the Boy Scouts in February of 1951 , the replica can be found on the northwest corner of the Capitol grounds .
