Explore how children learned over a century ago in the authentic and fully furnished 1885 schoolhouse. Just one of several historic structures on site that brings early Nebraska pioneering to life.
The Museum continues to expand its collection, regularly adding new exhibits. One of the newest is a Vietnam display in the military room, featuring uniforms worn by local veterans and drawing connections to nearby Fort Robinson, just 30 miles down the road.
Among the museum’ s most charming features are its personal collections.“ Clara’ s Dollhouse” showcases approximately 2,700 dolls in custom-made cases. The collection belonged to Clara Erixson, a doll maker and restorer who searched for years for the right permanent home for her life’ s work. She found it at the Dawes County Historical Museum, where her legacy now delights visitors of all ages.
Other eclectic collections include 1,500 salt and pepper shakers, quilts, pens, snow globes— and even manhole covers.
Admission to the museum is free, and its operations are powered almost entirely by dedicated volunteers whose pride and passion are woven into each carefully arranged display. These volunteers are an inherent piece of the museum’ s charm.
While self-guided tours are always welcome, experiencing the museum alongside one of the knowledgable team members unequivocally brings the exhibits to life.
Cogdill often highlights one of Chadron’ s most remarkable tales: the 1883 Chadron-to-Chicago horse race. On June 12 of that year, nine cowboys set out from the frontier town on a legendary 1,000 mile race to Chicago, finishing at Buffalo Bill’ s Wild West Show during the Chicago Fair.
Joe Gillespie was officially declared the winner although he technically came in third after the first two finishers were both disqualified.
“ The story behind the artifact is what makes the artifact and gives it more value,” said co-curator Rex Cogdill whose personal ties and deep knowledge of local history enhances every tour.
