Standing proudly on the Nebraska prairie, the Dawes County Historical Museum serves as a treasured guardian of the area’ s rich and enduring history.
Dedicated to preserving the heritage of Northwest Nebraska, the museum offers a warm and immersive journey into the past. Like all museums, it safeguards a heritage, interprets the past and provides a forum for learning for generations to come.
Operated by The Dawes County Historical Society since 1964, the museum was originally located in a two-story house in Chadron. It was later relocated to its current home, three miles south, on the original 160 acre farmstead of Nellie and Lee Card. The property was bequeathed to the Historical Society by the Cards’ last surviving heir, Newman Card, in 1970.
The campus now includes a 9,000 sq. ft. museum, a preserved log home and barn, an 1890s school house complete with period furnishings, a pioneer church and a Chicago and North Western caboose— a tribute to the foundational role of the railroad to Chadron’ s existence.
The museum houses over ten thousand fascinating artifacts dating back to the 1800s. Antique tools, clothing, farm equipment, quilts and vintage toys are thoughtfully displayed in themed areas that transport visitors to another era. A fully stocked general store recalls the bustle of early commerce, while a recreated hospital room features primitive medical tools and instruments of frontier days, long before modern technology.
The railroad room honors Chadron’ s origins, which served as key supply point for the Black Hills and a hub for the cattle industry.
“ We do have a few railroaders that come in and look for things, documents or pictures,” said board member and researcher Junice Dagen.“ It really has a lot of the history of various things,” added board president Sharon Rickenbach.
The Dawes County Historical Museum is dedicated to preserving the regions pioneer heritage through historic buildings, transportation exhibits and a 9,000 square foot museum full of artifacts that tell the story of life through the years in northwest Nebraska. myblackshillscountry. com Down Country Roads
