And the Award Goes to. . . Each year the Community Education Advisory Council honors individuals and groups who have demonstrated a commitment to lifelong learning. This year Gladstone had one award recipient: Phil Murphy received the Lifelong Learner Award for his participation in the Gladstone Woodcarving group over the last seven years. Fellow carvers have benefited from his demonstrations of techniques, carving advice, his lending of a tool or two, and the use of his patterns. A Gladstone carving session would not be complete without a joke, a story or an Irish tale. Over the last couple of years, Phil’s carving, bead work and leather work have been on display in the lobby at Gladstone for all to enjoy. Wanted Guest Grandparents to visit Early Childhood & School Age classrooms Were you a nurse, farmer, pilot, or train engineer? Did you create intricate quilts, rebuild engines, bake delicious delicacies, or build homes with your bare hands? We are looking for you to tell your story! Many of our young people are not connected to their grandparents, and miss the opportunity to hear about how life used to be! Gladstone is compiling a Seniors as a Resource list for our ISD 622 teachers who are looking to invite guest speakers into their classrooms to share life experiences with their students. No life story is too small, we want to share your life and learning with our young people! Please stop by or call the office, and we can add you to our growing resource list. In the meantime we are currently looking for seniors to: • Read to the children attending our early learning programs. • Help with simple cooking or baking projects at Gladstone. • Help with craft/art projects in our early learning programs. • Any expertise and/or hobby you are passionate about sharing. In the elementary schools • Help in our after school programs with activities (art/craft, no-bake cooking projects, and storytelling). • A group is needed to teach hand sewing to 3rd graders. • Any expertise and/or hobby you are passionate about sharing. Intergenerational programs have great value for the entire community! When we work together to view our young people, and our seniors as vital resources our community continues to thrive. Participants report an increase in social support and health, improved academic performance, and an increased sense of belonging. Join us as share stories, laugh, and engage in fun and enriching programming for all!
