Online Dating:

The Pro's & Con's

By Camille Ambrose-Santos

To a traditionalist, online dating may seem like a lackluster version of face-to-face dating that is only reserved for the desperate or overly casual romance seeker. For others open to the idea and even experience of online dating, it can be a fun, dynamic, and convenient way to meet people from anywhere, anytime. But what makes it a good or bad thing? It is up to each individual to decide their own opinions, but here are 12 commonly reported Pros and Cons of online dating.

Pros

1. Saves time- one can view multiple profiles, chat with, and/or meet people in a short period of time.

2. “Pre-screen” your options- based off of personal information provided online you can specify your search to only allow specific characteristics such as age and height.

3. You get to know someone better, faster- anonymity often allows more open conversation

4. Rejection hurts less- When someone tells you they aren’t interested or gives you the cold shoulder, you can move on easier. There’s plenty of fish online.

5. Meet people you normally wouldn’t- You can meet people that are not from your own area or social circle. Your options are effortlessly global if you desire

6. Attraction is based on who you are, rather than looks- Not judging a book by it’s cover is far harder in person. Having personal information readily available allows you to form a more complete picture of the person right away, making your judgment deeper than skin deep.
