site, helping to restore natural hydrology while reducing the loss of peat sediment into downstream watercourses. Together with bunding, these measures form an integrated approach to repairing damaged peatland systems.
An important element of the work is the reintroduction of sphagnum mosses, often described as the foundation species of healthy peatlands. Sphagnum acts like a natural sponge, retaining large quantities of water while creating the acidic conditions needed for peat to continue forming. As the moss expands across restored areas, it gradually replaces degraded vegetation and helps rebuild the peatforming process over time.
Although the engineering works are completed relatively quickly, ecological recovery takes considerably longer. Changes in vegetation may begin to appear within several years, but the development of a fully functioning blanket bog is measured over decades. Restoration therefore represents a long-term commitment, with monitoring continuing well beyond the completion of the initial construction works.
The environmental benefits extend well beyond the restoration site itself. Rewetted peatlands slow the flow of water following heavy rainfall, helping to reduce downstream flood risk. They also lower the likelihood of severe wildfires by keeping peat and vegetation wetter throughout the year, while reducing the release of carbon that occurs when degraded peat dries out and oxidises.
Wildlife has already begun responding positively to restored peatland habitats elsewhere within the Lancashire Peat Partnership programme. Improved wetland conditions have supported increased sightings of species including curlew, golden plover, dragonflies and damselflies, demonstrating how relatively small hydrological changes create more favourable conditions for a wide range of plants and animals.
The restoration of Aushaw Moss illustrates how practical land management, ecological science and environmental engineering are increasingly working together to repair damaged landscapes. While the visible construction activity may be temporary, the long-term objective is to re-establish a naturally functioning peatland that stores carbon, supports biodiversity and provides lasting environmental benefits for both wildlife and surrounding communities.
