NETWORK RAIL- EAST KILBRIDE STATION
The East Kilbride Station redevelopment forms a central part of Network Rail’ s wider East Kilbride Enhancement Project, delivering a modern, accessible transport hub alongside rail electrification and infrastructure upgrades across the route to Glasgow.
A major redevelopment of East Kilbride Station has transformed the existing terminus into a contemporary rail facility designed to support future electrified services and improve the passenger experience across South Lanarkshire. Delivered for Network Rail by AmcoGiffen, with engineering support from WSP and architectural design by ADP Architects, the project represents a key milestone within the wider £ 144 million East Kilbride Enhancement Project.
The new station replaces the previous building with a modern transport hub designed around accessibility, operational efficiency and future rail decarbonisation. Officially opened to passengers in August 2025, the £ 9 million facility introduces upgraded passenger amenities including a new ticket office, improved waiting areas, ticket barriers and enhanced step-free access throughout the station environment.
The redevelopment forms part of Network Rail’ s broader programme to electrify the East Kilbride to Glasgow line, supporting the Scottish Government’ s Rail Services Decarbonisation Action Plan. The wider enhancement works include 22.4 kilometres of electrified railway, signalling upgrades, accessibility improvements and infrastructure works designed to enable the introduction of quieter, loweremission electric trains across the route.
Architectural design by ADP Architects focused on creating a station environment that responds to contemporary passenger expectations while integrating with the surrounding urban context. The new building incorporates open circulation areas, increased natural light and improved connectivity between transport modes, helping establish East Kilbride Station as a more welcoming and accessible gateway for commuters and visitors.
Engineering input from WSP supported the complex infrastructure coordination associated with the wider enhancement programme. This included integration of electrification systems, track and platform works, accessibility interventions and operational improvements required to modernise the line while maintaining compatibility with existing rail infrastructure.
