The new 151-bedroom Travelodge Stratford Centre has transformed a vacant office building in east London into a modern hotel, bringing redundant commercial space back into use through a major refurbishment and conversion programme delivered by Barnes Construction.
Travelodge has opened its new Stratford Centre hotel following completion of an extensive office-to-hotel conversion project in east London. The 151-bedroom development, delivered by Barnes Construction, involved the redevelopment of the former Gredley House office building at 1 – 11 Broadway, close to Stratford Station.
The completed hotel is now Travelodge’ s 86th property in London and occupies a prominent location within Stratford town centre, providing direct access to National Rail, Underground, DLR and Elizabeth Line services. Westfield Stratford City, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and London Stadium are all located nearby.
Barnes Construction commenced works during 2024 after planning approval was granted to convert the vacant office accommodation into a hotel. The project involved comprehensive refurbishment of the existing structure rather than demolition and rebuild, an approach which Travelodge identified as significantly reducing the carbon impact associated with new construction.
The scheme was completed to BREEAM Excellent standard and refurbished in line with Travelodge’ s latest premium design specification. Internal works included installation of the operator’ s next-generation guest rooms, upgraded reception areas and the new-format 85 Bar Café, which provides dining, lounge and workspace facilities within the ground floor accommodation.
The redevelopment forms part of a wider trend toward adaptive reuse within London’ s commercial property market, where older office buildings are increasingly being repurposed for hospitality and mixed-use applications. Travelodge has highlighted Stratford Centre as an example of how redundant office stock can be converted into long-term operational assets while supporting regeneration and economic activity.
According to project information released by Travelodge, the total construction value for the Stratford conversion was approximately £ 11.4 million, with the programme running for around 18 months from commencement to completion.
